Day 2 of the biggest domestic tournament in Russia looks very promising. Day 1 has brought us some exiting games, and even 3 draw games occurred in group H, showing just how close the competition was. No major upsets took place, and all the favorites safely made it into the second group stage, just one step away from the money. But for 8 of the teams one step will turn out to be a one step too far. There are only four teams per group in the second stage, and every loss may turn out to be fatal. Every game counts here. Every round. Every bullet.

The total prize pool for ASUS Cup Spring 2006 is a nice round number of 1’000’000 Russian Rubles (or ~37’000 U.S. Dollars), which surely will be enough to secure the immediate future of the victors in every discipline. And when it comes to Counter Strike, its no less then half of that money, 500'000 Russian Rubles.

Total Prize Pool 500’000 RUB (~18’500 USD)

Nice fat checks will go into pockets of forty lovely young men, ensuring their financial stability and independence at least for the celebratory night out. And although the prize pool increase is not as significant as other disciplines (percentage wise) it is still a hefty 6'500 dollars addition.

Another thing that makes ASUS special is how relatively easy it is to get into the payoff zone. "All" you have to do is get in the playoff stage, and you are safely packing a thousand green ones. ASUS decided to sidestep the way of WEG and such, and to stick to what it really is- a "player first, show second" environment. Here's what Dmitriy 'c58’d1monn' Kuznetsov, the manager of the ASUS series, had to say:

Very few are capable of placing in Top 3, but when it comes to Top 8 a lot of people stand a chance to get their money’s worth. This is completely different concept (then WEG): we either feed a selected few gosus, or give the taste of glory for amateurs striving for recognition... We also try to encourage people from other regions who spent money on traveling here to come.
The System: includes three stages.

  • First Group Stage: Fourty-four teams compete in 8 groups. Top two advance
  • Second Group Stage: Sixteen teams compete in 4 groups. Top two advance.
  • Playoffs: Eight teams compete in a single elimination tournament, first team to take 2 maps wins.

Where: Moscow, Russia. Gaming center «4GAME»

«4GAME» –The first and the only gaming center dedicated to the needs of professional gamers in Russia. A two-story building complex conveniently located next to the AEC (All-Russian Exhibit Center) is the ideal setting for a high-scale e-sports tournament.

Disturbing banner, which recently appeared, on cyberfight.ru and points to the 4GAME website (which has nothing but a flash intro) informs us that the gaming center area is 800 square meters and will include a hundred "super-powerful" computers.

Other than that a cloud of secrecy surrounds this place, and so far there has been almost no information about what 4GAME is really packing and not a single photograph was released. Fortunately for us there are still some home-brewed detectives in Russia, a Starcraft fan, Ayumi[a2] has managed to free up her busy schedule and take a trip to the mysterious house #12 on Yaroslavskaya street.

Ayumi_a2:

Surprise! The 4GAME gaming center is still under construction! The two-story building is renovated from the outside, but inside there is still rubbish from the construction everywhere. But the set up of the gaming equipment is already in progress. The area is small, but cozy. The lightning is and all the windows are camouflaged (maybe just until the construction is over?) A little park and a stadium can be found nearby. There is no cafés in the proximity, however it’s not a problem if you’re willing to take a little walk –AEC is really close, and the trip from the subway station was just a bit over five minutes. We were informed that the gaming center will be fully functional on May 25th, the day before ASUS launch.

Unfortunately, fearing industrial espionage, the organizations prohibited Ayumi from taking photographs inside the building.
ASUS Winter 2004

The first three ASUS Cups were missing Counter Strike, for a simple reason that at the time there no computer cafe in Moscow that could provide comfortable conditions that would live up to the name and the reputation of the tournament for a decent amount of Counter Strike teams.

ASUS Summer 2004

picture
The fifth Cup, ASUS Spring 2004 was also missing Counter Strike, as ASUS pulled back a bit on the sponsorship, and cup down the support by 700 USD and 1400 USD in hardware and the cup was solely dedicated to Quake (5! different Quake nominations, ranging from Q3 duel tournament to QW 2v2 were present).

ASUS Summer Cup 2004. The sponsorship setback could still be seen, but Counter Strike is back on track with 2000 USD, 6 ASUS 9600XT graphic cards and 4 ASUS A8V motherboards in the prize purse. The reigning champions, Virtus.pro, have proved once again that they are a force to be reckoned with, and DIOsoft, one of the few Ukrainian teams at the tournament, showed stable results, moving one step up and placing third. Tarantul, team from Belarus managed to prove that there is talent to be found even in the last dictatorship regime in europe, suprising everyone by placing 4th.

Virtus.pro take the gold for the third time, ultimately sealing their position as the dominant Russian team. The Russian legends from M19 re-emerge once again, and destroy everyone on their way, until they hit the concrete wall of Virtus.pro defenses head on. Pro100, team who would soon thereafter win two ASUS championship, places third.

ASUS Winter 2005

A shock for the Russian community, no less. A furor for the Ukraine! In a discipline where Russia is thought to be undisputed leaders if not in the world, then among neighboring countries, the victory slips through their fingers. The results speak for themselves- Virtus.pro loses to Ukranian team pro100, two Ukranian teams and one Belarussian in top 6. The spring season is coming to an end, and it is time once again to put away our pens and book packs and wipe that dust off your good old mouse and keyboard. The ASUS Cup is here.

And it looks like this one is going to be pure excitement, pure exhilarating fun! The returning champion, the two times ASUS gold medallists, team pro100 (who, surprisingly didn’t make the invite list) is back in action after winning Ukrainian qualifier. Another returning champion is Virtus.pro (who did make the invite list), who were the last men standing three times. But, unlike pro100, the last time Virtus felt the touch of ASUS gold was two years ago, in the long gone 2004. Virtus, who had a very dry year, are no doubt anxious to prove once again that they have the drive and the skill to win.

The aroma of intrigue is in the air, and everyone is still, waiting for the fiery finale of spring gaming season. Who will take the victory this time? Virtus.pro? pro100? Or will it be someone new? The incredible talent pool Russia is, it is next to impossible to predict the winner of this tournaments. Add 8 best teams from the neighboring countries (2 from Belarus, 2 from Kazakhstan, 3 from Ukraine, 1 from Moldova) and all the predictions you might have head are going straight into garbage can. Welcome to ASUS.CS!
