I've known Bernardo "PaTo" Rodrigues for over a year now and I've met him once, on every occasion that I've spoken to him I got the vibe that he's a genuine and kind hearted fella. While my previous attempt to interview him failed, I got him for a live interview in person at the ESWC and today I present to you an exclusive interview with PaTo.

Hailing from a little town outside Brazil, PaTo is one of the few players known from Brazil. He's been around for a while now but he started reaping the benefits of his rewards only recently ironic enough that he's probably at the end of his career as well. PaTo is by far one of the most loved guys in the scene (pro-gamer wise) even though the community would chose to put him down at every opportunity it gets... This is his story!

The First Game
My first game was when I stepped into a cyber cafe when my friend told me about this super cool game (cs) and I saw warcraft 3 and since I used to love war2 I clicked on it, seemed really cool to get raped by Computer. I picked orc on first game and blademaster with mirror image! that's all I remember from my first game, lol.
Introduction

Hey Monkey boy! Can you introduce yourself to us and give us some trivia that no one knows about you?
I am Bernardo Rodrigues, 17, a (shitty) student finishing the last HS year, trying to get into an university! Oh and I play warcraft too. I like to eat bananas with chocolate.

How did you get into computers?
Well since I was like 5 years old I used to see my older brother playing computer but at a young age I used to play more video games, like SNES and n64 (but I played a little of NES too). I'm a Nintendo fan boy.

PaTo Warming up!

What attracted your fancy to gaming and now multi-gaming?
Well, I always loved multi-gaming, I always played video-games a lot with my friends, but then I didn't know the "on-line" world yet. After I begin playing war3, I saw the lovely competition that it could provide me, and as I'm a competitive guy, I gave it a try, but not with such ambitions... In the beginning I just wanted to beat the best guy at the cyber cafe lol. As I practised, I got to know the tournaments such as ESWC and WCG and that really interested me, so the passion began

Which clans have you been part of?
jNg, GGL(aka u5, hoorai, PiG, sCa, mTw )
jNg, u5 and mTw

Being a part of jNg and accomplishing so much thanks to lag from Brazil, I was wondering which team provided a better support for you? I mean the jNg guys were on LAN always then how come you changed teams?
Well, I'm not an unloyal guy. I changed teams because at that time, Levin and Skyward had stopped playing, two of our core players. So me and MysT had to carry jNg all through the wc3l season 8 qualifiers. But we failed then. The motivation to the team to continue was 0, I had no choice but to search another team. at that time I was very friendly with everyone in u5 already, so it was a perfect fit for me.

You reside in team mTw right now, what is so special about this team?
Well, everyone in the clan is very friendly and willing to help each other and I think we have a strong bound between ourselves I think, otherwise we would have been split along time ago. We are always cheering and trying to make everyone in the team feel comfortable. (Sounds like a gay story) But well, some of the mates have been together for more than 2 years I think, like me Nilk, Legato, the last remnants from u5.

You were part of the u5 team which had a lot of old school players, including guys like incinerator (who blocked me on msn because he thought I was from WCR), Sabre and the like, what's the most cherished memory you have of them? Could you share it?

u5 was really a big family... I miss them all; Sabre, Newbiee, Incin, ViVi, bunny, we had a lot of good times together, but I guess the most funny was when Incin came on mIRC drunk trying to say he loves bunny ! that was a funny day lol.

mTw without the Germans from L-to-R: LongWalk, PaTo, Nilk, Canuck, KiwiKaKi

Can you tell us a bit about your clan mates and what each of them means to you?
Oh Elroy don't do that to me. That's such a long list, but here we go I guess:
KiWiKaKi : I would say he's the big child of the team! A funny and friendly guy, who likes to practice all the time. But never hurt a French Canadian guys pride, it might be really bad.
Nilknarf: This guy used to be shy but now I converted him. We're great friends for a long time now and I know I can always count on him for everything!
Protois: A reserved guy, doesn't like to talk much, but when he does, its about to diss noobelves. He's like a 2nd version of nilk xD.
Longwalk : A timid boy, but so lovely also, and lazy also. Always trying to do this best, but he hasn't achieved 100% of his potential yet.
Nightwolf : NW has a bit of Russian on his blood, so what can I say? he's a crazy fucker.
Rukie: This german scares me! just kidding! he's a very nice guy and we've been close for some time now! I wish to meet him someday
Legato: we've known each other for ages now... what to say about this old friend! I always like to listen to his advice, wish I really considered them ( well sometimes they are stupid lol) and I hope to meet him someday too!
Community and Thyself

Alrite, moving on to friends in the community, what special bond do you share with fellow players in the WC3 community and who are they!?
Well, really, on the wc3 community I made a lot of big friends. From Brazil I'd say the whole jNg team + ikki ,moska, alfaciii, three guys known of the Brazilian community. Internationally, there are a lot of people I think who are big friends of mine! Elroy (:D), Nilk, Canuck, Hulk, Rotterdam, Legato Newbiee, Incin are the names that come to my mind first.

You've not gotten much love from the community, people calling you a free win all the time, despite showing strong results, "luck" seemed to have played in almost all your major wins (according to the community) Did this ever affect you?
Yea, I wont lie. I'm not MUCH(read carefully.) of a lag whine guy but, from Brazil the conditions aren't very good, I would compare it to China. Even though the majority of the community comments are from trollers and stuff, I always get a bit sad when reading those, but well life goes on.

Recently you had a spurt of pretty good finishes, qualifying for SW4, Finishing Top 8 at the ESWC, what bought about that change?
To be honest, around January-March I was almost in inactivity. When Blizzard announced s5 USA regionals, I always wanted to go to USA one day so I thought: "I guess I will give Warcraft 3 one last try". Then, I had to ladder a lot, and I think that's what helped me to improve a bit, since I was never much of a ladder boy and am a bit lazy also. Then with discipline the results came, also I would say that joining mTw really gave me motivation.

picture
PaTo at the ESWC Qualifiers in Brazil

Coming back a bit to the community, you've always been helpful when it came to submitting your replays (Winning ones!) So what's your favorite community site and why?
Haha come on, its not always like that :P. Well I'd say I am more familiar with wcreplays.com since its more about the American scene, the one I am into and try to develop it.

Interesting, did you ever have any proteges? Any players you thought needed to be guided a little and so you did?
Well, not any particular proteges but, when someone had a good will to be a host slave for me for example I always used to help them a bit and also some guys I've met on US East, same for some Brazilians. when LongWalk wasn't that good yet, and he had WCG USA finals, I used to hate Phreak at that time, so I helped him a bunch to beat him lol.

I see, you wouldn't openly like to state whom you don't like or like right? If you could punch one person from the community in real life who would it be?
Hmm. Not sure if i want more conflicts.

The community (read: ToT/Tek9) accused a lot of the sCa players being "snipers" on the East/West ladder during the season 5 online tournament, how much truth is there to it?
Well, mostly Canuck and NaNiwa used to enter on low level accounts, and without matching us, matched ToT and Tek9 guys and raped them, was a bit unfair but well they used to ladder 24x7 so we had to do something against it, since ladder is all about who plays more. But they really blew the whole incident out of proportion.
Real life

In real life whom would you consider to be your role model and why?
To be honest, I don't have a role model, I just go following and doing my own role in life

Which is your favorite book/magazine?
My favourite book is the Romance of the three kingdoms, a book of the story of the end of the Han Dynasty in china, takes between 180-280 a.c.
my favourite magazine...Hmm, should be a porn one.

picture
PaTo in the Orient at StarsWar IV Finals

What kind of music do you like listening to?
Dance, Trance, HipHop, and some kinds of brazilian music

What is your choice in cars and why?
I am not much into cars, but I'd like to have an "uncommon" car such as new beetle

Do you play football? If so then what spot and why?
yeah I play football I like to play mid-field or attacking spot, I don't know why, because I like to score maybe. But anyway I am not good at soccer! But I play every week at my school, because its so much fun.

What sports do you like to play?
Only football

What activities do you indulge in school?
ah, no I don't do any of those gay things like dramatics, elocution and the like.

Which are your favorite subjects and why?
My favourite subjects are history and maths, because they are the less sucking.

What do your parents mean to you? Are they encouraging of your e-sport activities?
My parents are just fine about that, but they don't like when I come home with bad grades and they blame gaming xD

Are you dating any girl right now?
no im not dating any girl ;~

I've heard that you're really into the whole fitness thing? What is your aim? To become like the hulk?
Well, at my 13~15 I was pretty... Chubby. And I felt uncomfortable with that, so now I am working out to be a pimpz!

What's the one thing that Brazilian women have that others don't?
Beautiful bodies, not very skinny and vice-versa!
Strategy and TFT

You've been regarded as one of the better elf versus undead players, what do you think is the key? Is it your unit control or strategy or some other factor?
I think the key is all about controlling the early game, if you can handle the rushes well, creep good and get up an expansion the game is like 80% won for you, but otherwise the game is 99% lost for you

Can you tell us the basicsof the elf versus human matchup?
Depends of the map.. on map such as TR and TM I prefer DH as my 1st hero and naga 2nd.. and the game is mostly about harassing well the humanavoiding at all costs unit losses, trying to stall the max to get bears and then use ur mighty attack move. At maps like EI and TS I'd prefer to go DR and try to secure my self an expansion early to coutner his, then going panda dryads and adapt in game

In your experience what has been the most unique strategy you've seen ever?
Axslav's tinkers tower-rushes were pretty unique and fun to watch, but mustn't be fun to suffer it lol ^^, and I also liked panic wasano's dreadlord 1st

In a mirror match we've seen several new strategies coming up, ones that overcome the POTM+Hunts the like, what do you think makes you a good elf vs elf player?
To be honest, I don't consider myself a good elf mirror player. I have many problems countering the POTM t2 expo strategy, which I always tried to counter on micro, but sometimes didn't work.. However, on DH bear mirror I think I was pretty good because I have a good bear micro! (amove hi)

picture
PaTo - Man or Beast?

There are two questions I've been wanting to ask an elf for sometime now, so let's go; Time to fess up, do you attack move? and secondly; Do you think elf is imbalanced?
hmm depends of the situation.. sometimes you gotta focus units 1 per 1 ,like when you have hunts dryad army versus bear, or dryad army versus gargoyles, but yeah sometimes for example versus human you have plenty of bears, you cant just focus a unit so you attack move and try to pick 2 bears at each medium armor unit ( rifle breaker ), but i gotta admit sometimes when I overwhelm undead population wise I just attack move not and I think elf is the most easily race to play at lower levels, but at the high level I THINK its pretty balanced, maybe elf and human have an edge slightly... Mostly I think its just that the community likes to pick up on elves :P

Do you have any issues with balance in the game?
At the moment, as all elves I think, I really dislike playing versus tanks/towers or mass gargoyle strategy , but other than that I think its fair for elves... when I play Orc I find handling human tower rushes boring as well

What do you think about players who rely on hero focus to win? Does it take them only so far?
Well, in my opinion its just a strategy after all and its counter able ( buying pots and most important invulnerability potions) while the rest of the army does the damage per second ncessary. Nothing against those, but yeah its kinda frustrating to lose to that sometimes

Have you played this game right from Reign of Chaos or are you also a late entrant? what are you're early memories of the "pros" back then?
Hmm, yeah I play since the imba AoW patch ( oh wait its still imba.) .. The good memories I have back then would be the Inso vs InToX game at some CPL on Gnoll Wood where Insomnia towers the shit out of intox base but still losses. I used to like SK.BeaVeR's game also he inspired me to do mass dryads.

What is the most unique strategy you've ever used?
Kinda hard question, since I'm a noobelf cookiecutter style user. But I guess that would be when I used versus undead for a while Pitlord solo, however it only worked on Undead at US east, I wonder why...xD

Who in your eyes are the top and most creative players in the world for each race?
- Creo
- Grubby, Lyn
- Sky
- FoV
Farewell PaTo!

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Probably robbing money from poor Brazilian people! BWAHAHAH
Hm just kidding. It will depends of what kind of university I will take on, but yeah, probably working and stuff :(.

Do you want to concentrate on college or do you want to play more computer games?
atm im a bit bored of computer games.. so I'm gonna concentrate on college, unless a really cool game come out.. (Like super smash bros brawl!:D)

picture
PaTo after a game

Whom do you consider to be your role model in the online world?
Kinda hard , I guess no one

In South America, there's a new league come up there, where they have South American nations playing against each other in Warcraft 3. What do you think this does for the game over there?

In my opinion, this is just a try to don't let the already-almost dead-scene survive a bit more. The scene here never was something considerable, I guess better than Africa, lol. Brazil is raping without any difficulty at all, make it pretty boring also. (Might be bad mannered but its the truth, sorry!)

You've decided to take a slightly inactive role in the team, what made you go about that decision?
Mostly, I am at the end of high school and I gotta take a lot of exams regarding entry into universities.. In Brazil the system works like DO OR DIE. If you fail the exam gotta wait a whole year to try again. So therefore I am studying ( at least trying more ) to try to pass.. however after the summer tournaments I felt pretty bored with the game and I dunno if I will come back at the "top" shape I had however I wont retire 100%, maybe if someone on my team cannot play I'll be filling in for them :D.

picture
Canuck and PaTo at Cancun

Will you ever get into Starcraft 2 when it comes out?
Well, I never got really along with Starcraft series. In my childhood I played n64 games with friends whole day Now I think I'll stick to some wii games, since they are more casual and take less time, maybe if it sometime get bigger I could get hooked again !

But do you think it'll be balanced since there seems to be no elf in it?
Im not a god to answer that, only time will answer this.

I must say after aT-Wizard, there's only been one player whose pants seem to be a defining characteristic in their attire, so can you tell me what are the secrets of those pants? Origin etc!
lol I just consider my shorts a LUCKY CHARM xD and it just makes it different from the "original" everyone use jeans, its boring.

Would you have considered going to Asia (either in Korea earlier or in China at the moment) to pursue a career in professional gaming?
Well, now since I'm decided to study, not. But some months ago , if I had the opportunity I really would love to go and see how it works, maybe reaching the level I never reached due to Brazil internet and bad conditions of practising

Any last words/praises/comments/shoutouts?
I'd like to give a shou tout to whole mTw, my brazilian friends, Hulk, Nihor, Kevin and everyone who likes me. Signing off!
Storch
PaTo is a young player from Brazil who has been around for quite some time. He is a very nice person and always up to a joke, which is why he is liked by most people who know him. PaTo is currently the only South American player who is actively playing on a competitive level, and especially towards the end of WC3L season 11, he improved a lot and beat many favourised players, so that he can be counted as a real top player, nowadays. Unfortunately, he has not been given many chances to prove himself in the new season, probably because some of his teammates at mTw are doing pretty well at the moment. But I'm sure they will rediscover his worth at some point and he will not disappoint, then. I personally wish him the best of luck in his next tasks, see you around, PaTo!

MYM|Nordahl
Pato is an interesting player. He has shown some promising results, but he has also been up and down. I think with the right practise and support he could go a long way.

4K^ToD
I got to meet PaTo a couple of times offline, he always seemed pretty well mannered and like a cool guy. I dont know him too much but all I can say is that for his first time in club at StarsWar he did good on the dancefloor ~ !

PGS|ShrieK
PaTo is a lot of fun to be around. I enjoyed hanging out with him at the Season V regional, and he's always funny to talk to in IRC.He is young has shown some great results. The jNg legacy lives through him.

fnatic.Rob
Well, he is pretty friendly and it's always nice to talk with him but his humour sucks believe me ;) Over all he is a normal guy except that his race is elf but everything else about him is fine :P

fnatic.Satiini
I don't know much about PaTo, only what he seems like, i.e. a well chilled out dude who doesn't take things too seriously! Just the way it should be!

wanzerg
PaTo is definitely one of the coolest and funniest guys I've ever met from e-sport. We've been through hell (St Ouen, 2006) together and we had so much fun each time he came to France. He's one of the very few players that won't shut you down because they think they're worth more than you. He's a great asset to teams, not only because of his great level but also because he brings a real nice team spirit.

mTw|ohnf
He is very funny and very bad.

fnatic.XyLigan
VERY VERY NICE MONKEY :)

4K^Creo
Despite his age Pato has been around in the wc3 scene for quite some time. I suppose I met him first at eswc, as Pato has been one of the brazilian representative at every eswc and wcg that I can remember. What happened at this years WCG qualifiers? Maybe lack of time to practice, maybe unlucky, who knows. I used to practice a lot of elf mirror with PaTo, and in most situations; if the strategy worked against Pato it would work against good Koreans in WC3L. I got to know this guy in shorts and sandals a lot better through the years, especially when we shared rooms at StarsWar in China. Luckily it was sweaty hot in China, as opposed to the summer at ESWC in France
when it was like 18 degrees and Pato said that this was so strange; the wind actually "hurts" because it was cold. That's when you are reminded that you are indeed from different parts of the world =)

mTw|rukie
PaTo is one of the nicest guys I met so far in gaming. And I got to know many players due to several different teams. He always supports the team and you can be sure to never have serious trouble with him as a Team-Captain. He also tries to help the other guys on the team with all kinds of stuff. Hopefully I will get the chance to meet him off-line someday soon.

mTw|LongWalk
PaTo is a pretty interesting guy, to put it lightly. He singlehandedly started everybody in the US on the brazilian slap game, and i heard he is a pretty heavy drinker. I think it's safe to say i taught him everything he knows, and that he will always respect me as his true mentor... he's been playing very well when he's in practice, obviously, and i hope he doesn't go inactive for much time to come!

mTw|Nilknarf
Pato is a great guy to talk to and hang out with at tournaments. He has a fun-loving, upbeat attitude and is always up for doing something, as long as it's not practicing. But when he practices, he's a really great player capable of beating nearly anyone, on lan or online. Plus, he's been a part of nearly every 2v2 team in mtw and the other clans he and I have been in together. Pato becoming less active is sad news for mtw, but he has proved that he can still win important matches for mtw in 2on2. Hopefully we will meet again, perhaps at the WC3L finals. Bernardo fighting!

Bjarke
I don't know how he is now, but he used to be a nice guy who was always ready for a series of practice games ^_^. He has nice braces :P

GeN|Spittie
Funny brazilian guy, talked some with him back in the days through Jaca. Very talented as a player and with a lovely sense of humour. I often followed his replays and it's sad to see him less active. Credits to him for his extreme loyalty too, even though his team changed names quite a few times, he always stayed with the core players, ever since jNg to u5 I believe.I tip my hat for you

ElakeDuck
Deep within south americas most secret and forgotten jungles, natives tells a story about a keyboard where the A button is so worn down it can hardly be recognised. It belongs to the fearless nightelf abuser known to man only as "pato". Man or myth? Legend or shit kid? Only time will tell. We can only know one thing for sure, he probably like bananas.

Cube`p1nke
Pato likes to dress like a goth girl and listen to my chemical romance. Na, to be honest Pato is the best brazilian gamer there ever was, as far as achievements, clans and overall perfomance goes.Heck, he's one of the top elfs in the world imho, yet he can drink a shitload and is the only one who wanted to drink a beer in one chug after 8 or so, gotta give him props for that. Hope he keeps on raping and i get to drink with him on some other major event.

Fire_de
I met Pato at the ESWC2006 and had quite some fun together with him. I like him as a person and think he is quite similar to me. A little shy towards strangers, but quite happy around people he knows well. Also, I like his manners as I cant recall any situation in which pato has done something unfair. Skillwise he ofcourse isnt close to the elite, but he still has had some successes and was able to travel around the world to attend events.

NoA|HappY
I don't know pato that well, but I can remember that he tried to get as much default wins versus us in the WC3L Season 8(?) qualifiers as possible, just to get into the WC3L. Anyway, from what I've heard, he is pretty OK now. I wish you the best of luck, bananaman!

fnatic.RotterdaM
Pato is just one of the funniest guys around to hang out with at events, I will probably never forget the marathon we run trough the streets at Paris in 2007 at 4 am. It's a pity his connection sucks which logically kills his motivation every now and then, but he proved several times that he can be a great wc3 player if he plays a lot, and I hope we will see the pato who reached top 8 at ESWC once again in the future, also cause it's a lot of fun to play with him.
