Considered by many as one of the best Orcs in the world and definitely one of the best Orc's from South Korea. Hyosub "FoCuS" Eom, has been playing competitively from a very young age and currently 18 years of age has managed to become one of most known names in Warcraft 3.
Despite experiencing a slump in recent times he's all geared up and fully prepared for the upcoming WC3L season and for WCG as he's the only fnatic left at the top 8.
His role in fnatic goes beyond his solo prowess as he also forms an excellent 2on2 team with Shy. The boy has made a lot of choices at a younger age and while it's difficult to get a true glimpse of his personality this will probably be the best.
What goes on behind the quiet face of Hyosub, in an exclusive interview with fnatic.com, he talks about love, friends and himself!

The First Game~
I thought WC3 is so interesting, so I started this game but it was veryhard. It took me a long time before I could win the 1on1 game versus computer opponent, even longer for me to reach level 10 on the ladder.
Hyosub for his part has always remained humble about his success currently in his "5th year of pro-gaming" as he puts it, he doesn't feel the need to talk much about himself, "am just a standard player and I don't think there's much to me that people already don't know".
He began his gaming career when he was all of 4 years old, "My first game would be Super Mario I don't think I could finish it but I remember having a good time playing it" says Hyosub.
While it's a necessity for some people now, about 10 years ago a computer wasn't as affordable, "When I was young I had no PC since it was so expensive at that time so I could only use it in my school. I got my first PC when I entered into middle school" says FoCuS when I asked him since when has he been in love with computers.
But beyond a computer, do the girls, money or fame attract a young boy to game? "I don't think I wanted to get any of that I just played this game and I found its a lot of challenge to play games against a stronger player and winning over such a player feels amazing. So I chose this path".
His path in teams has been somewhat of a roller-coaster ride starting from the sombre K2 and Qpool to moving into World Elite he soon found solace in his friends again as he came from World Elite a little weary from the dizzying pressure and challenge it presented. After some stellar performances in Go the team was absorbed by NoA which couldn't match the allure of going to MYM. Now after a year well spent in MYM which even earned him the most improved player award. After a lot of other accolades he came back to his friends where he currently resides in fnatic.
Clan Go was the team in which all of them began their journey in as Warcraft 3 players and FoCuS has fond memories he shares with the team, "All my team-mates were originally in the Clan Go, so we are very close to each other", he goes on to talk about MinHyuk and Shy, "Minhyuk and Shy are my best friends whom I meet up often with Yange, Space, Kei were the men whom we felt friendly with each other during playing games, and we could get more closer during clan regular off line meeting." says the resident of Ansan.
Despite being so close, Hyosub had his moments where he left the team and chose to go into more established teams. Twice he did it, one for WE and the second instance was with MYM, "Well I had no other choice at that time and I think my clan-mates understood why I did it. I learned a lot of things when I was in WE and MYM and I thought someday I can come back to my friends and play together with them..." says FoCuS.
While he's a lot more recluse when it comes to the others at LAN he has a few friends with whom he regularly socializes with "I am close to most Korean gamers for example - MYM crew and mTw-Check but I don't meet often or drink with them often, because I rather spend my time practising. Am not so outgoing so when I can rest I chose to spend my whole day at home reading, sleeping or playing some other books." says FoCuS when asked about his friends outside Go.
FoCuS on playing Poker professionally:
I have no interest in playing Poker, I don't like it much, but sometimes it's good fun to play with Shy and MinHyuk if we're bored.
FoCuS on European players:
In my opinion they are amazingly creative, their sense of playing the game is really great. I do not want to comment on the manners since it varies from nation to nation. There are always going to players from each country be it Europe, China or Korea some players are good mannered and some aren't.
FoCuS on spending his eSport earnings:
Everytime I get my salary salary or prize money, I save almost all of that money.
His role model in real life? - I don't have a role model thing, I just live my life on my own terms.
Books or magazines? - I have read "the great king Sejong Chronicles" lately, and my favorite book is "our happy hours" by a famous Korean writer Gong Jeeyoung.
Favorite music genre? - I have no favorite genre in music, just I listen to songs of my favorite singers. and I usually turn on the music when I play ladder.
Cars? - no interest in them
What sacrifices have you made to become a pro-gamer? - I gave up my study and sleep, especially it's hard to give up my sleeping for participating in the European leagues.
Did you have to give up social commitments too, what did your friends think or to this day still think of you becoming a pro-gamer? - After I became a pro-gamer, I lost all my contact with my original friends since I lived my life with reversed sleeping patterns. so I have no friends aside from my team-mates now.
Fashion fnatic? - No, I am not!
Thoughts on becoming a SC2 player - it's not up for buying yet, and I have no plan because I never played that game yet.
Are your parents supportive of your gaming? - my parents are very precious ones to me, but my life is up to my choice, and now they are encouraging my pro-gamer activities
If you are going on a date with a girl, what would you say to her to get her heart - 'I love you'
I usually don't consider the "map balance". It's just about using the strategy that can really bring in the right results. One just needs to "exercise" or practice regularly. I always think that I can beat anyone when I enter the game, I don't think about imbalance.
On his choice of Panda against Human:
When playing against Human, for a Orc player it's more important to answer the question "How does Orc interfere with the humans creeping efficiently". For me, using the Blade master and Panda proved to be a good choice against a human that expands a lot.
Unique Strategy:
I think the most unique strategy I have seen in a match has to be from DayFly who used a mercenaries with a Farseer and Tauren Chieftain and got Wind Riders and a few Shamans. He beat a human on Twisted Meadows with that, I was very surprised.
Orc mirror:
In the early game it would be very important to get your Blademaster levelled up to 3 as soon as possible. Unit control is another important thing as you need to know what to target and what not to focus on initially, mid and later in a fight.
Against Undead
I usually just use the Blade master, Tauren Chieftain, Grunt, Raider, Wind Rider combination. Try to force a battle on tier 2 and try to kill fiends or if the Death Knight coils I try to kill one of the undead heroes. Depends, it's situational mostly.
Most unique strategy used by FoCuS:
I think it was in the MIL tournament where I used a dual barracks with Tauren Chieftain against Check.
Best players for their races in Korea:
mTw-whO
Myth
Moon
Lucifer
HoT & Zacard have 1 thing in common, they are both famous for their keyboard smashing skills. Hyosub on the other hand has had several opportunities to do it as well, so what's his count? "I have smashed 3 keyboards during my games in tournaments". However FoCuS wants to remedy this as he shares, "In retrospect I do repent for not having better self control on myself and am trying to control my anger better now".
Taking this chance to examine the mind of Hyosub I also peered deeper into his understanding of management. Being his manager I asked him what was the necessary qualities for a good manager. Hyosub trying to keep it simple replied with a "Be friends with your players - it's the most important thing". A simple yet understandable reply, perhaps it was right or perhaps its was wrong.
Everyone in fnatic is a close friend but Shy and FoCuS are the closest as Hyosub considers Shy as a brother and vice versa. They have known each other a long time and have a great rapport when playing 2v2 as well as he says, "I don't know how it happened but we played a lot of practice games together and we got drunk a lot too, it wasn't intentional but I respect him a lot and I feel like he is my elder brother".
I think it would be good to get mobbed by fans and if I could get asked for a photo but I don't see that happening for sometime!
If you can describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be?
Diligent, Faithful, Love.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I think I should be doing my military service at that time.
Any last words/praises/comments/shoutouts?
Thank you(yes Elroy you) and Naana who helped us as translator, and thanks to all fans who will read this interview!
