All eyes on Joe Miller

The interview

line

Hey Joe! Could you please introduce yourself to our readers, and try to be funny.
Hey Sam! I just recently turned 21 years old and I’m originally from Rotherham in the north of England! Im a crazy kinda guy with a big love for music, football and of course games. I can usually be found watching football in the pub (2 great things in one) or in the office working like a slave.

My escape is a big night out at music events – I love most things dance music and can be found at the front of the DJ booth jumping up and down with both hands in the air!

You joined fnatic in November 2007, what did you expect by joining our team and work in the office at Southampton?
Well ive known both Anne and Sam for about 4 years now so I was very excited to be invited to come down to live and work with the team in Southampton. I originally came to head up the media team but after I got instantly hooked into Fnatic I slotted into the general manager role alongside my good friend 2GD.

I was expecting to have fun, work hard and help progress Fnatic when I started. I’d like to think that all three of those things have come true!

You are also working for quadV as shoutcaster. Do you have enough time for both fnatic & quadV?
As one of the owners of QuadV I have a fairly big role in the day to day runnings of the company handling all the online scheduling and making sure our great team of casters is always happy! Of course my work as general manager of Fnatic is very time consuming and there are times where I wish a day was 30 hours long. I think Ive learned to balance my work load pretty efficiently by now and I really enjoy working on both companies.

How does a typical day in the office look like?
The great thing about the Fnatic office is that there is no “typical day”! I try to wake up as early as possible (even if I love my sleep :D), do the whole shower routine and then head into the office. Ill usually stay in the office working until around mid-night.

Our day really depends on whose around, what events are going on, what projects need to be finished – We have a very diverse team of players that live across every time zone in the world so it can mean waking up early to talk to someone in one country then staying awake late to talk to another!

My old jobs (outside gaming) were just one big routine, I love that we have so much diversity in Fnatic.

What are the bests moments you had so far as General Manager here at fnatic? The worse?
I’ve had countless good memories so far and I’ve been here for less than a year! I guess the two occasions I can pick out are the 3 week Call of Duty 4 tour (AEF, TEX and i34) and the ESWC Masters.

The Call of Duty tour brought back a feel of the 2005 CPL world tour where everyone knew everyone and everyone stayed in the same place together. Everyone went out to eat, drink and I guess some even slept together :P I love the COD community and this tour was a great time of my life – I have some memories that will stay with me forever!

The ESWC masters was again another close knit event with everyone staying in the now famous “ETAP”. We partied hard on the last night with a lot of the CS and quake community and everyone had a really great time.

As far as worse memories? I don’t have any yet!

Our former General Manager, James "2GD" Harding, left a few weeks ago. What are you feelings?
Jay is a very good friend of mine. We had lived and worked together for around 9 months so I guess we were kinda like a married couple :P

It was of course a sad day when jay left Fnatic but I have faith in him to go onto great things within gaming!

I heard you were listening to lots of electronic music. Can you give us your top5 and tell what other kind of music you love listening to?
I love all kinds of music but mainly electro, trance, minimal and bit of deep techno! Ive had the chance to see many of my favourite djs play with the exception of my VERY favourite, deadmau5! I just booked tickets to see him play in my home town at the start of October so I absolutely cannot wait for that!

One of my dearest friends is also a top up and coming DJ in the UK so keep an eye out for Pat Ahern! (Some of his mixes can be found on his page)

My top five (though its not easy to choose!) :

A lot of Fnatic players have been to the office and you had to chance to meet them. Which squad or player is the coolest and why?
Ive met most of the Fnatic team and its hard for me to single out individuals if im honest! When we look at new players we always take into account wether they fit into the Fnatic family or not. As such we are all good friends and share a lot of things in common.

Id have to say that ive spent the most time with the CS 1.6 and COD4 teams so of course they are very close to me. The WoW and WC3 teams are also a great bunch of guys (and girl :D) that are super fun to hang out with.

I guess my overall message would be that everyone that plays under the Fnatic name is an absolute legend in my eyes!

Sam "zr0" Mathews is kind of the boss in the office. What do you think of his work style? Is he bossy?
Sam is a great guy that I’ve known for a good few years and admire a lot. He has done a huge amount of work within E-Sports by setting up Fnatic and helping with countless other great projects.

I find it easy to get on with Sam when we are working. He’s fairly laid back as far as a boss goes and when he does have a bad word to say its usually my fault anyway :D

You went to several LANs all around Europe this year. Which one was the best?
I love going to events, they are the times when you can see your work paying off and get to meet great new people. I would probably say that the KODE5 global finals in Moscow was my favourite event so far this year. Many events create a great atmosphere but this seemed to be the best (the Russian crowd were amazing!).

I’d have to give props to a few other events too though – The Experience in Denmark was the best run COD event ive ever been to and the ESWC Masters was a fantastic spectacle for everyone there!

I heard you really had fun in Paris during ESWC Masters with some guy called Nostra? Tell us a bit more please!
HAHA! Well I’ve not known Nostra for too long actually. We first met at dreamhack summer when we were drinking a beer in the World Cyber Games bus watching a Sweden match from Euro2008.

He’s another fantastic guy that has put a whole load of effort into E-Sports. His latest project the Esports League of Champions (ELC) is going to be great for gaming and I can’t wait for it to start!

His wife also gave birth to their second child recently, so congrats on becoming a daddy again mate!

How does your family react that you are totally involved in Electronic Sports?
My family have been amazing when it comes to gaming. Of course back in the day when I was playing Battlefield instead of working on my school they would give me a whole bunch of crap!

After I left college I went on the CPL world tour and have been working full time in gaming ever since. It was only in November last year I actually moved out of their house so I guess they are thankful for the extra space they now have :D

What are Joe Miller's favourites hobbies?
Football (SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY), music, gaming, and of course – partying!

Describe yourself in three words.
Crazy, Fun, Kind

Elroy "Noname" Pinto: If we were all characters in the Simpsons I'd be Appu but I think you (Joe) can be Barney of the show, do you agree sir or if you think you're someone else from it, who would it be?!
I would certainly agree. Barney is known to be the coolest and funniest character! Have you seen the episode where he changes and gets his act together? DAMN he scrubs up well! :P

Patrick "Spittie" Bernadotte": We all know that you act fairly human on weekdays but are infact a furry bear. My question is. How long does it take you to comb your fur every morning?
HAH well. My hair is actually pretty long right now so it’s a case of washing it (conditioner twice a week!), using a hair dryer to make sure its bone dry and then a good 20 minutes to straighten it! It took me a while to master, but at least I’ve stopped burning my head!

HaHA That's my boy. It's sooo quiet at home, peaceful, no one snapping the key in the front door or trying to drink melted mars bars from a pint glass at 3 in the morning in the rain sat on the patio. Happy days......
