ReDeYe: eSports commentator then and now

by bidy on October 17th, 2008 at 21:00 CEST

.
.
What advice would you give to potential shoutcasters who want to emulate the success of yourself and others?
Work hard, have passion for it and never fake enthusiasm. I have written a mini book to answer this question, it just needs finishing and then we will publish it.

How did you refine and develop your inexperienced shoutcasting style into how you cast today?
I was lucky enough to work with the best in the business in djWHEAT and TosspoT and really my style is molded from my experiences alongside them over 3 or 4 years and a mix of what I think a caster should be saying and doing.

DjWheat, Tosspot and yourself are ‘the’ eSports shoutcasters, do you think anyone will be able to replicate the success you three have shared? Or who perhaps do you think will replace you when your time is up?
I think there are lots of potentially great casters out there and in fact, I really hope there are. We seriously need more people to come and do this and do it to a high standard, otherwise my great fear is that when this finally explodes all over TV land, they will just go back to using ordinary sports people and that would be a travesty for gaming coverage.

I am also very proud of how our talent has developed at QuadV over the last 18 months too. We have some world class casters who don’t get enough recognition. People like Jay and Deman who work so hard and bring people dynamic and enthusiastic coverage of their games time and time again. They are people who have flourished at QuadV in to world class commentators who now appear regularly on TV and attend premier events for us.

We also have a few more pushing through to those kind of heights too and our American team is superb, so I definitely think the talent is out there, it just needs time to flourish, the right environment to succeed and some training and help that hasn’t existed until now.

Don’t forget people like Tasteless out in Korea either, he is breaking new ground for Western commentators in videogaming and I would certainly have him on a list of top professional gaming casters.

Outside the CGS and Xleague.tv it is very rare to see a ReDeYe shoutcast now, is your era over with more stage presenting to come or will we begin to see and hear you on QuadV again?
Its true I have spent more time doing live TV shows and presenting on stage and doing voice work and so on and that alongside event commentary does take up the majority of my time. I would love to just boot up a game of UT or Quake CTF and just cast for the hell of it, but I just don’t find the time and my other time is better spent running, organizing and promoting QuadV to sponsors and potential TV and event contracts.

I wouldn’t say its over though, I would love to get back in to doing a show and perhaps as the season gets quieter after November I might find the time to get the show we have planned on the air.

Of your peer shoutcasters who do you admire the most and why?
Tough question because all of them work so hard and are ridiculously dedicated to casting games, building esports and helping promote the brilliance of players and teams. I admire anyone who does that and takes esports forward and I think every shoutcaster does that in some way or another. If I had to name anyone it would be Stuart “TosspoT” Saw, just because as well as doing all that I mentioned above, he also runs Crossfire, organizes successful lan tournaments, helps us run and grow QuadV and still finds time to kick my ass when I need it.
