Hi guys!
Welcome to my first blog on the new Fnatic website, for those of you who don't know who I am, my name is Gavin Weeks, I go by the name of Geepak or flikQ. I am the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Evisua/NeverBland.
Firstly, a bit of a history lesson: Evisua/NeverBland is a creative studio myself and Sam Mathews setup last year. It has been very successful, launching some big projects for brands such as PCGamer, T3, BraveNewTalent and even a BBC Radio 1 DJ! We are based in the heart of London in Soho. You can read more about us at http://www.evisua.com. We are currently a team of 8 marketing, designers, developers and project managers, with 3 more members joining the team over the coming weeks. Not bad for a company of 4 only 9 months ago!
Back to present day, how could we launch Fnatic so it wasn't just another gaming site. Back in December when Fnatic got 'hacked' - I use that term loosely as it was simply a case of some guy logging into a former members account, hardly hacking, but anyway, Sam noticed a Hefty spike in the traffic, be it for you guys to come and have a laugh or offer your support. So the mission was set...FNATIC MUST DIE!
"All your sites are belong to us" was born, from the obvious cult hit "All your base are belong to us". Simple, cheesy but effective!
However one point to keep in mind is that we knew you would get bored of the hacked news very quickly and be on your merry way, so the only choice was to leave a few clues:
Firstly, NVRBLND, for any of you with the sense to do a little research quickly discovered that it is the company NeverBland that Sam and myself own, Secondly we left the Analytics code in the page, obviously so we could monitor the traffic of people coming to investigate the hack. This should have given you enough of a clue that something fishy was afoot!
These apparent "errors" in our bid to deceive you had the desired effect, it sparked the debate required to gather momentum for the launch. Some of you correctly guessing it was going to be the new site. As a result we had some pretty impressive traffic over the 3days of hack to launch. I also think from another perspective we have gained a few more friends for the manner in which handled the launch, making you all part of it.
The dancing and singing was just for us! ;)
I hope you enjoyed the experience and enjoy the new site. I will be posting another blog up very soon explaining some of the reasoning behind the new design, usability and UI. Trust me, even if you currently don't like the new site, you will at least understand why some things are how they are.
Until then, keep enjoying the site and don't do drugs!
