Counter-Strike What?

BLOG

I originally set this to be an article on the Fnatic website but I felt it wasn't in the right "emotional state" for the website. So I took it down soon after I published it. Only a few people were able to read it. It has since been in the atdt's trash can containing unpublished articles like the Fatal1ty "no manners" one. Enjoy.

If there’s anything I have learned from being a disruptive sixteen year old asshole who thought he was right about everything is that you’re going in the wrong direction if you’re looking for any sort of credibility because sooner or later people are going to catch on to your mindless shit babble and you’re going to be preaching to an interested audience of zero. So when I read something like “Counter-Strike Woes” I can’t help but wonder about the sort of people that are allowed to write criticism on an award winning website like SK-Gaming. Granted criticism is a freedom that writers have; it comes with the job, but if you’re going to try and pass off non-researched rhetoric to an overly involved group of readers, you’d better make sure there are no red flags.

I’ve stopped playing Counter-Strike 1.6 a long time ago so I still have some of my dignity intact (ha ha), but I still don’t deny my interest in the competitive scene with world class teams. If hoping that the former home of the most prestigious Counter-Strike 1.6 tournament would regain its glory is a trap, then I’ve been ambushed! There is no shame in wanting to see a tournament of this stature remain as such by appealing to its greatest audience. And I don’t see the “trap” here really. Another tournament has been announced that is offering you money to play a game.

I don’t get it. Maybe it was the fact that Angel Munoz was inconsistent in his reasons for his choice in games. But there was always that bottom line to the CPL that I always understood and it was that they wanted to keep things simple and keep with their roots (Counter-Strike and Quake). So seeing any version of Counter-Strike or Quake back at the CPL isn’t so surprising to me because I’ve always seen CPL to be a welcome home to those two games.

Now the thing that confused me while I was reading this published blog rant was where we get to the part where there is an attempt to destroy Angel Munoz’s credibility and I just kept wondering, does the author actually pay attention? Or is he another GotFrag forum troll with green squares? Well it wasn’t the former, and I see no valid evidence to suggest otherwise, or to suggest that Angel Munoz has not been making decisions with the best of intentions towards the progressive esports.

I myself have never experienced the loyalty or disloyalty of a prostitute, but I would imagine that it would be proportional to the amount of money offered to them. Maybe this is exactly what this article was trying to say, or maybe he just ran out of good words to use, but if we take the “prostitute” out of the equation and replace it with “businessman” it would be more respectable wouldn’t it? That’s what Angel Munoz has said countless times about running the CPL is that it’s a business. This brings me to my favorite part of the article.

So why haven’t we been seeing Counter-Strike tournaments at the CPL? Well we’re given one reason, as quoted from Carmac’s interview with Angel, and it’s that the CPL felt they needed new games. This is an understandable decision that I can relate to. Since I don’t want to burn out on the current games that I’m playing I start playing new games to keep my mind fresh. I also agree with the author about gaining more respect for Angel Munoz if he has just come out and said something along the lines of:

“We want to use Quake and Counter Strike 1.6, but we're having trouble securing sponsorship in order to host events. This means we either have to hold smaller events (or none at all), or switch games for a year or two in order to secure some finance.”

But that’s just it. He did say that. If the author had actually watched Epileptic Gaming and paid attention to Angel Munoz’s interview instead of trying to label them both as spreading “propaganda” then he would have seen the part where Angel specifically pointed out the problems with not including Counter-Strike in the CPL tournaments. He says in his second interview very clearly:

“You know what guys? Did you listen to the show last time where I explained in detail how we couldn’t get sponsorship? Didn’t I tell you? What is up with you guys?”
Angel Munoz Interview

Guess what Richard Armstrong: He’s talking to you.

So here’s what I want from you:

One: An applaud for “his honesty and transparency.”
Two: A “donation in order to help run events.”
and Three: Watch Epileptic Gaming Live at 7pm EST Monday – Friday. (blatant EG plug)

Wow, congratulations firstly, not only have you showed both your immaturity and blatant lack of tact although seeing this on fnatic I'm not overly surprised about that. I was going to write a nice long explanation since you clearly couldn't interpret between the lines but you seem to be the only one who didn't understand my column.

The fact that even CS players in their droves agreed just shows how ridiculously failed an attempt this is to flame. You didn't even have the courage to post a reply (of this nature/detail) in the column which just goes to show what kind of person you're.
