The Belgian eSports scene

Hi there, my name is Nicolas "suNset" De Waele (also known as Dev) and I'd like to give you my point of view on the following subject:

"What’s going on with the Belgian Counter-Strike scene?"

Well, you can obviously divide it into two parts:
The diehard 1.6 community, who continue to play the good old gameplay, and the Source lovers, who enjoy playing Counter-Strike with better graphics.

As I've noticed lately, many 1.6 clans start to move onto Source here in Belgium.
There are many reasons to explain this:
1) Source is new, fresh and looks awesome. It’s a fact, CS:S looks awesome, and almost every bug has been removed since its launch date.
2) Source is supported by lots of leagues and cups. Belgian clans can sign up for professionally organised leagues, such as CAL. It’s also very successful at LAN-parties.

So basically, the Counter-Strike community is totally divided.

Another problem we have, is finding sponsors.
It’s extremely hard to find a good sponsor in this country, because non-gamers consider gaming as something childish and don’t look at it as something professional.
Sponsors just don’t see a future in professional gaming.
While in countries as Korea, gamers are considered as heroes, here we’re all considered as nerds or geeks..

Sponsorship is also one of the major reasons why good clans give up so fast.
I know we have very talented players here in Belgium, but we just don’t get the chance to prove ourselves, due to lack of sponsors.

Maybe I should move to Sweden…

first off all, how many GOOD Swedihs organisations are there?...none
all the teams belongs to foreign organisations so moving to sweden would be a bad choice, cuz it aint "normal" to play video games here either ;) (I know you aint moving to sweden, just sharing facts).

its only a few countries sponsors actually see any potensial in gaming and som of those are usa, korea, china & germany. now the problem in rest of the world is that general people aka society doesnt see gaming as anything big, its games. but in these countries they have established a great ground DUE TO having fans that can dedicate themselves to gaming by actually supporting sponsors that invest a great deal of money in teams and organisations.

over and out

The divided CS scene is a global thing; it's not only in Belgium.

As far as I know about the belgian gaming scene, there have been several good oppertunities for belgian teams. I'm thinking about defusekids, outpost gaming, tek9 and GUNK. Somehow, they always seem to disband or go inactive at some point. We don't really deliver any exceptional good players as other countries do. No good teams and players means a hard time to find decent financial support.

And it's certainly not harder to find sponsorship in Belgium. There are plenty of IT related companies who would support teams if it would pay off. But it doesn't for a reason stated earlier.

You can prove yourself without sponsors. There are tons of prestigious tournaments online and offline in Belgium or countries close to it (Germany, The Netherlands, UK).

This is not about countries at all.
